Theme: Distortion of US History
My sustained investigation was birthed from creating works that fit my interests. As I created, there was a consistent flow thematically, but it wasn’t until presenting my work to my peers that the theme presented itself to me. This theme is a contemplation of the myths taught to us about United States history, through popular culture, media, and school, and how those myths distort the truth from the common people. Inside this umbrella of a theme, I have focused on particular media which has included three major myths, The Cowboy, The Mobster, and The Soldier, who are glorified through media without the truth being shown candidly. I also attempted to tackle the 3 major and most harmful myths in American history, Manifest Destiny, the Lost Cause, and the American Dream. Manifest Destiny was a major tool for Westernization, the Lost Cause a major factor in Southern teaching of the Civil War against Reconstruction, and the American Dream, which is a major part of our everyday life, thinking, and culture. Throughout these works, I have tried to reveal our perception of the truth with the reality of said circumstance.
The process in which I create my work is through Adobe Illustrator, blending hand-drawn images from my Ipad with shapes and text to create work with a message. In some cases, I utilize popular images and iconic imagery that can be recognizable, so that I can tear down what the image stands for and means. Utilizing recognizable images along with other lesser-known figures, I try to portray a contrast between the two. Along with shapes and lines to shape the flow and consistency I think the work I have created tells stories by utilizing the figures and shapes mentioned prior, as well as utilizing multiple artboards to tell the story over time through the use of spacing.
